I guess the radar isn't lying then. Nothing reaching the ground that I can see(haven't gone out yet though)in our area.

I should have been more specific. I was talking at the abode here in Spring Branch. The son and wife live out near you srain and I imagine he had to deal with it this am for his ride. He is a field tech who mainly works out side.

Radar indicates minor little ice episode over for HOU area.
But poster "Ticka1" at the KHOU local weather blog reports the 6Z GFS shows the mother of all winter storms only a little more than two weeks away from Houston!

HGX update suggests a little more "wintry weather" later. We shall see...
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
952 AM CST MON DEC 22 2008
.DISCUSSION...
FREEZING LINE HAS DIPPED DOWN TO A LINE FROM JUST NORTH OF
VICTORIA TO HOUSTON TO WINNIE. VERY LIGHT FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLY
MIXED WITH SLEET IS IN THE PROCESS OF EXITING OUR EASTERN-MOST
COUNTIES. CLOUD COVER SHOULD LIMIT MUCH IN THE WAY OF WARMING
TODAY SO LOWERED HIGH TEMPS A TOUCH. ALSO ADDED THE MENTION OF A
WINTER MIX OVERNIGHT ACROSS THE NORTHERN 1/3 OF COUNTIES. WILL
EVALUATE INCOMING 12Z DATA MORE AND MAY END UP NEED TO ISSUE A
WINTER WX ADVISORY FOR PORTIONS OF THE REGION. REAL QUICK FIRST
GUESS WOULD BE NORTH OF A COLUMBUS TO TRINITY LINE. ISENTROPIC
LIFT AND DEEPENING MOISTURE LEVELS SHOULD ALLOW A BIT MORE PRECIP
TO REACH THE GROUND ESP AFTER MIDNIGHT. FCST TEMPS IN THAT AREA
SHOULD BE IN THE LOWER/MID 30S...BUT EVAPORATIVE COOLING WOULD KNOCK
A COUPLE DEGREES OFF THAT. AGAIN...WILL LOOK AT IT IN FURTHER
DETAIL AND COME UP WITH A DECISION FOR THE AFTN PACKAGE. 47

Re: SE TX/SW LA winter weather: First day of winter=cold
We are up to 35ºf now!!!!
Just talked to the wife during lunch and she said it was sleeting here at the house when she left for work at 7am. This is turning out to be a very interesting winter. If the pattern change that is being talked about happens in January it could get even more interesting. The last time I remember two December Winter precip events is never. There have been winters in the past where we have had a couple of icing events and of course the biggest of all besides 1895 is 1973 when we had 3 measurable snows in 5 weeks in January and February.

I remember those snows well in '73. One year in Klamath Falls, Ore was enough snow for the parents. back here in East Texas it's nice to get a good snow every once in a while. Seems like you all have gotten more in the last few years down south than we have.
Well at least we're nice and cool this afternoon at 29°. Maybe we'll get our chance of some wintry mix in a couple of weeks?

What a year that was. I have vivid memories of folks driving, or should I say sliding around with snowmen built on their cars. The January event in 73 certainly shut the city freeway systems down on that Thursday and Friday morning. Maybe, just maybe we'll see it again. Time will tell. Also at 35 "unofficially" right now.

To add to the 'unusual' nature of this month....there is a possibility that you see 2 winter precip events in a month that ends up being above normal in temperature. As of the 21st, Houston Intercontinental is +0.1 deg above normal month-to-date. The avg temp will fall today, but the above normal temps from Wednesday through the weekend will increase the current above normal departure for temp once you start seeing the forecast lows that are 20+ deg above normal around Christmas.
