Texas Winter 2013-2014

Interesting that these early rounds have included sleet in DFW. Is the thermal profile colder than expected? Will it change when the main disturbance spreads eastward out of Mexico?

Did you expect something different?!

Temps/winds have been fairly consistent here in Austin since this morning but the dewpoint is dropping. That could make one feel "colder." We're holding in the low 40s in the immediate metro area and upper 30s in the north/northwest/west outskirts.

No surprise, wouldn't surprise me either if they still have a very conservative view of the situation.

And yeah our dewpoint is dropping.

Had enough sleet in Sherman for awhile that sidewalks were treacherous. Now back to freezing rain. No traffic issues yet but ice accumulation continues to occur on trees and elevated objects.

Getting our first signs of precip here. It's hardly even a drizzle, but it is something. The temp has dropped another degree down to 30 (at least according to my station.)

It will certainly be an interesting night. Things are already nasty just a few counties up to the north.

Dewpoints in the Bryan area are already at or near freezing. What's interesting is that the temperatures in that area are almost identical to the Austin area.

It's switched to all sleet here, but things are starting to get icy. Roads look ok, our car and the grass are iced up though. Husband doesn't work too far away, but I'm going to warn him to take his time getting here.

We have a light sprinkle already in Jacksonville, about 30 miles south of Tyler. My therm says 35. I'm interested to see what the next 24 hours brings us.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
318 PM CST THU DEC 5 2013

.DISCUSSION...
A DEEP LONG WAVE TROUGH CENTERED OVER THE WESTERN CONUS COUPLED
WITH A COLD ARCTIC AIRMASS IN PLACE HAS CREATED A SET-UP FOR
WIDESPREAD WINTER WEATHER ACROSS NORTH TEXAS. PRECIPITATION BEGAN OVER
THE NORTHWEST ZONES THIS MORNING AND HAS EXPANDED STEADILY EAST
THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON. AT 3 PM THE LEADING EDGE OF THE MAIN AREA
OF PRECIPITATION EXTENDED FROM PARIS TO DFW TO COMANCHE. ICE HAS
BEGUN TO ACCUMULATE ON ELEVATED SURFACES IN WESTERN AND NORTHERN
PORTIONS OF THE METROPLEX WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE FALLING BELOW
FREEZING. FARTHER NORTH...BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES ARE BEGINNING TO
ICE UP IN COOKE COUNTY...AND THIS IS PROBABLY THE CASE FOR MOST
LOCATIONS FROM GAINESVILLE TO BRECKENRIDGE. TEMPERATURES IN THE
THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH METROPLEX REMAINED JUST ABOVE FREEZING
DURING THE MORNING...BUT HAVE SINCE FALLEN TO 29 IN FORT WORTH AND
31 AT DFW. WE SHOULD SEE A CONTINUED DROP IN TEMPERATURE AS
PRECIPITATION INCREASES...LEADING TO MORE IN THE WAY OF FREEZING
RAIN IN THE METRO AREA...AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE WINTER STORM
WARNING AREA...DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS.

IT APPEARS THAT FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS...ACCUMULATIONS WILL
REMAIN MINOR IN THE METROPLEX AND AREAS SOUTH AND EAST...AND
LIMITED TO BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. BY 8 PM...MOST OF THE WARNING
AREA WILL HAVE DROPPED BELOW FREEZING WITH MANY LOCATIONS IN THE
UPPER 20S. UNFORTUNATELY...PRECIPITATION INTENSITY IS EXPECTED TO
INCREASE SUBSTANTIALLY TONIGHT AS A STRONG SHORTWAVE EJECTS
NORTHEAST OUT OF NORTHERN MEXICO INTO WEST-CENTRAL TX. THE RESULT
WILL LIKELY BE MODERATE TO HEAVY FREEZING RAIN ALONG A NARROW
NORTHEAST TO SOUTHWEST SWATH...SOMEWHERE NEAR THE METRO AREA...IN
THE VICINITY OF THE 850MB FRONT. WHEREVER THIS BAND OF HEAVIER
PRECIPITATION OCCURS IS WHERE SOME ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF GREATER
THAN A HALF INCH CAN BE EXPECTED. OTHERWISE...ICE TOTALS OF A
QUARTER TO HALF AN INCH ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE WARNED AREA...WITH
THE HEAVIEST OCCURRING DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. SOME
ACCUMULATIONS WILL STILL OCCUR OVER AREAS FARTHER TO THE
SOUTHEAST...INCLUDING THE PALESTINE...WACO...AND TEMPLE AREAS. WE
WILL LIKELY STICK WITH THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN THESE
LOCATIONS DUE TO TEMPERATURES HOVERING CLOSE TO THE FREEZING
MARK...AND ACCUMULATIONS ON MAIN ROADS WILL BE MORE DIFFICULT TO
ATTAIN. GENERALLY SPEAKING...IT LOOKS LIKE THE FARTHER NORTH YOU
GO IN NORTH TEXAS...THE MORE DIFFICULT TRAVEL WILL BE.

PRECIP WILL END FROM WEST TO EAST FRIDAY AS THE PRIMARY SHORTWAVE
HEADS EAST OF THE REGION. AN UPPER TROUGH WILL ONCE AGAIN DEEPEN
OVER THE WESTERN CONUS LATE IN THE WEEKEND. A SUBTLE SHORTWAVE
WILL SHIFT EAST ACROSS TEXAS SUNDAY...BRINGING WITH IT A SLIGHT
CHANCE OF SLEET. MOISTURE WILL BE LACKING WITH THIS FEATURE...SO
PRECIP AMOUNTS SHOULD BE FAIRLY LIGHT WITH THIS SYSTEM. A
RESURGENCE OF ARCTIC AIR WILL KEEP VERY COLD TEMPERATURES IN PLACE
THROUGH THE EARLY PART OF NEXT WEEK...WITH A GRADUAL WARM-UP
DURING THE MIDDLE AND LATER PARTS OF THE WEEK.
