Winter Weather Summary

Snow, Ice and Heavy Rain in the East..
A storm is tracking up through the Ohio Valley today; its associated cold front has swept through Texas and Louisiana and will push through Florida tomorrow. This storm has a tremendous amount of moisture and strong upper-level dynamics. In the warmer part of the storm, flooding rain and severe thunderstorms have been the problem. On the cold side of the storm, snow, sleet and freezing rain have fallen.
As the storms pull northward, the rain and freezing rain in Ohio and lower Michigan will change over to snow or at least flurries. Farther north, across northern lower Michigan and on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the precipitation will be all snow, and several inches will accumulate. The ice in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania will change over to plain rain today, then to snow or flurries tonight. From eastern West Virginia and western Virginia up into the southern tier of New York, a significant buildup of ice will be found, but many places will change over to plain rain during the day. Snow and ice will overspread all of New England by late in the day.
The major Northeast cities will encounter icing problems for a while, then change over to plain rain.
The next system coming on to the West Coast will bring 6-12 inches of snow to the Cascades and 3-6 inches to the northern Sierra by tomorrow. The snow will spread inland, with generally 1-3 inches in central and eastern Washington and Oregon, northern Nevada, much of Idaho and into the mountains of western Montana.
