Blizzard warning for Des Moines until 9 am Wednesday

A blizzard warning is issued when heavy snow combined with sustained winds of 35 mph in a 3 hour period occurs. Visibilities can drop to near zero in this situation!!! Statement below.

INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...AMES...ATLANTIC...BOONE...CARROLL...
CRESTON...DES MOINES...FORT DODGE...INDIANOLA...IOWA FALLS...
MARSHALLTOWN...NEWTON...PERRY...WATERLOO...WAVERLY AND WEBSTER CITY

...BLIZZARD WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED UNTIL 9 AM CST WEDNESDAY...

EXPECT SNOW...OCCASIONALLY HEAVY...TO PERSIST OVERNIGHT WITH THE
HEAVIEST SNOW RATES EXPECTED THIS EVENING. SOME RAIN WILL INITIALLY
BE MIXED WITH THE SNOW SOUTHEAST OF DES MOINES THIS EVENING...HOWEVER
A CHANGE TO ALL SNOW WILL OCCUR QUICKLY BY MID EVENING. SNOWFALL
AMOUNTS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED BEFORE THE SNOW TAPERS TO
FLURRIES EARLY IN THE MORNING. WINDS WILL ALSO INCREASE OVERNIGHT TO
25 TO 35 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS PRODUCING CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND
DRIFTING SNOW. VISIBILITIES WILL FREQUENTLY BE BELOW ONE QUARTER OF A
MILE WITH BLIZZARD CONDITIONS EXPECTED...ESPECIALLY IN RURAL AREAS.
THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. TRAVEL WILL BECOME VERY
DANGEROUS WITH THE WORST CONDITIONS EXPECTED FROM MIDNIGHT TO 6 AM.

It may be a good idea for Des Moines residents to stay where they are until the storm is finished.
