AM update on snow amounts for the NE...

Good morning folks. It's still a big mess in the Boston area and the cape and Nantucket. Snow amounts from NYC to Boston have been very impressive and were well in line with many of the forecasts expectations.

Staten Island: 12 inches
Central Park: 14 inches
Bryant Park: 17.3 inches
Newark, NJ: 15.3 inches
Bronx County: 23 inches

Foxboro: 18 inches
Boston: 15 inches

BWI 6.8 inches
Dulles Arpt 7 inches plus
Philadelphia: 5-10 inch range


Still a very dangerous situation in New England this morning with heavy snow and blowing snow in Boston. Visibility is below 1/4 mile in heavy snow and blowing snow. Wind gusts on the coast were near hurricane force this morning. Definitely one for the record books. Even in the snow impact scale, this was declared a category 3, which is what we see about once every 1-2 years.

I had 5 - 6 inches in my backyard.

The "official" snow total from Philadlephia International Airport was 4.8". Around Philadelphia in the suburbs was up to 10".

I think what held the totals down abit was the fact that the storm didn't really get it's act together until it was off the NJ shore towards NY. By that time, the wrap-around snows were to our north. If it was further south, like off of VA, we would've been clobbered!

The sun actually peeked out at around 3:00 pm.

About 17 inches in my backyard. Got lucky because of that heavy band that set up over the Hudson Valley yesterday.

Big snowfall in the Hudson valley and tristate region alright. 17 inches sounds like an excellent amount and an average total for the Hudson Valley and the tristate region.

14 inches in central park
15.3 inches in Newark, NJ
12 inches in Staten Island
23 inches in the Bronx.

Very heavy amounts for so early in the season. Amazing stuff and it's not even the calender winter yet. We have to wait until December 21st I believe until Calender winter begins. But it's already been very active. It couldn't have been a better start to the meteorological winter though, lol

I'll detail that aspect shortly. It would be cool to get some decent snows into that area of the country, i.e. Kansas points north and east.

Rangeley, ME: 34 inches
Everett, MA: 28.5 inches
Newark, NJ: 16.4 inches
Central Park: 14 inches
The Bronx: 24 inches of snow

Logan 15.4 inches at 7 am.
East Boston 22 inches with 6 foot drifts at 10 am

Some places even inside downtown Boston could have at or over 2 feet of snow as we speak. Gotta wait for an update from Logan regarding more current snowfall amounts. It's way over 15.4 inches by now, maybe more like 20-25 inches.

Some years, of course, it can be December 21st. Spring tends to start as early as March 20th, because of the usual 28 days in February.

... and obviously summer and autumn are either the 21st or 22nd of June and September, respectively, too.

So very true Stephanie! That is what hurt my forecast, as I expected the 2nd storm to get its act together and begin moving NNE about 300 miles further south and a little closer to the coast than it did. Either way, it was a great early season snow and hopefully a harbinger of things to come this winter.
