Signs of winter has begun

#1 Postby LehighValleyForcaster » Thu Oct 23, 2003 6:20 am

Well.............it is here.

Sleet is falling while I am typing this post. Not allot but enough to prove winter is coming.

The first in the Valley.

Looks like the Lehigh Valley will be grabbing :grab: it's first taste of winter.

Like I said before...............I am not going to jump into the fire yet :onfire: but conditions are in the making.

Too early to tell and too early to write about/

We had about 45 minutes of snow flurries up here in Tamaqua. It was enough to lightly dust the patio roof and the cars.

Looks like those snow flurries went just to my north. Hopefully, we are only a month or so away from the first accumulating snow.

I went to bed too early last night to catch my first glimpse of snow. Got a bit of light snow and flurry activity after 11pm last night. One of my co-workers said he saw nearly an inch accumulated along the highests elevations along the Taconic Parkway this morning. I saw nothing as I drove to work in the dark this morning, kind of disappointing.

In our snow yesterday, we didn't get any accumulation, but I woke up this morning and there was still snow on the roofs of my house and barn.

In a normal year, I would have had my first snow later this week, this year??? Can you say SUMMER? We've hit 85° "8" days in a row, our normal high for this time O' year.........55°, yup...30° above average BUT.....there IS hope on the horizon, temps are suppose to cool down some 20-25° by tomorrow and Sunday!

Winter? We had a record high for this time of year yesterday -- 85°, same as you, Dennis. But they're calling for 70's this weekend.

Well, I stand corrected. At around noon today, I saw some snow flakes falling. The flurry did not last long, but it was the earliest in the season that I have seen snow flakes since the suprise 1" snow of October 10, 1979.

Not necessarily, Colin. Back in December 1989, the winter was a tale of two seasons. CHS recorded the 7th coldest December of record and also set the all-time records in ... snowfall in one month, snowfall in one storm (missed the 24 hour record by 0.2") and in fact, many locations in the East recorded very cold temperatures only to see Jan-Mar 1990, one of the warmest periods in modern history. The same could be said about the Winter of 2001 after a brutally cold November-December 2000.

I was disappointed about not seeing my first flakes today, but as I was driving home from work I noticed just the hint of some of the white stuff on top of some of the mountains in the area up here. So I decided to head south on Rt 9W, over Storm King Mountain down to Bear Mountain. And 1pm, on top of Storm King Mountain (only a couple miles from my apartment actually) there's was some snow on the ground. Probably looked beautiful earlier in the morning, I'm sure some of it had melted by 1pm...but it looked like it could've been up to a inch before melting. I was surprised to find it so close to my apartment. Kinda makes me wish I took the drive last night at 8pm when it was just drizzling at the apartment and actually seen it falling. Oh well. Anyway...a bit further south on Bear Mountain, not quite as much, but still looked like they probably had a pretty decent dusting up there this morning. It was just nice to be out in the cold, get a glimpse of the white stuff for the first time this season. Certainly looking forward to the first significant storm down this way.

Here in Ohio Valley we have snow showers forecasted in the 7 day planner. Next week, Tuesday into Wednesday. A lot could happen before then so I'm not getting my hopes up but it sure was nice to see that S word in the forecast. And I don't mean sunny or storms!!!! LOL

Matt - sorry to hear you missed out on the snow flakes. Hopefully, it won't be more than a month before we get to see snow flakes again.

Well, here in Houston, our winter is usually heralded by a week and a half to two weeks of Indian Summer, which we are having. Highs have been in the 90's the last two days. Forecast calls for our usual fall ending squall line or severe storms on Saturday evening with a high in the 60's on Sunday and low's in the mid 40's for a few days with highs in the mid 70's. We''ll seee some heavy coats coming out here for that "cold" weather.LOL!!!  We should now begin our normal slow cool down towards our "coldest" part of winter in late Jan./early Feb.

It's alright...the drive to see the snow on the ground well made up for it. My apartment is at about 200 ft...driving along 9W through Storm King State Park, the elevation of the road peaks at about 1200 ft, but I'd say I started seeing snow on the ground by around 800 ft...literally just about 5 miles from my apartment. Needless to say...I have a feeling I'll be making the drive up the mountain several more times this up coming winter.
