Hello, I have a question, please help.....

The temps. here in the Raleigh,NC area have been really above normal, we have the possibility of getting some brief snow and freezing rain tonight and into Thursday morning and they say it may accumulate on cars and trees and powerlines but it won't on the roads due to the warm weather we have had. How many days of cold weather do you have to have for the road surfaces to become cold enough for winter weather to create a problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

Good question, NC. It depends on how cold it is and how warm it was before. But it isn't as long as you'd think. For example, relatively warm ground conditions can be overcome by several hours of snow. If you had several days of cold temps (25-30F) you would probably cool the ground enough to support snow accumulation in about an hour of moderate snow once it started.

I live in North Alabama, so when they say "warm ground conditions may prevent accumulation" I don't worry too much. Just give it some time. Ground temps, to me, aren't the end-all-be-all of when you get snow. It depends far more on the upper air dynamics and general outside temperature.

We had a few snow flakes and some sleet and freezing rain last Thursday, but it was very short lived . It's colder now and it doesn't look like there is any warm weather in sight. Hopefully it will SNOW SNOW SNOW before the Winter season is over, surely hope so.. How is your weather??? Take care.
