Latest GFS run shows some frozen precip for the south...

#1 Postby Donwx » Sun Jan 01, 2006 5:38 pm

The latest GFS 12z model run shows much colder temps and maybe some wintery precipe in the middle of January. Keep in mind the GFS has been consistent on the possibilities of frozen precip and much colder temps for the south. since last Thursday the GFS has been hinting at a very strong cold front possibly Siberian air? and the GFS has been consistent on having the Southern Jet active at the same time. This follows JB's thinking that by the middle of the month theres going to be very cold air across the country keep in mind the longer the cold air stays up there the colder it gets. Heres some images of the GFS:

What effects will the Houston area feel if this verifies?

The GFS looks a little warmer for that time period as of the 18Z run, but then again, you should not trust it until we are in the one week or less time frame (and even then be careful). Either way, I agree that a much colder period is going to be coming. The models will go back and forth, but in the end an ice cold chill should be over Houston by the middle to later part of the month. I think hard freezes and wintry weather will all be threats before the month is through. IF the the 12Z run were to be correct, then we would probably see an inch or two of snow here in Houston, but as I said; THAT GFS forecast has already changed. We'll have to wait and see...[/u]

GFS is more accurate about 48-ish hours beforehand.
We can only hope for a good blast of Ole Man Winter,
in the form of SNOW, by then!

If this verifies, it would snow in New Orleans again. But, we don't want snow in New Orleans...this signals a hurricane. 1964-snow and 1965-Betsy. 2004-White Christmas, 2005-Katrina. Yikes. No snow this year for New Orleans, PLEASE!!!

Big divergence in the AFDs around the SE tonight. For Friday night, Mobile has 24 degrees and Tallahassee has 18. Birmingham, Jackson, Nashville and Atlanta don't go anywhere near as far out on that limb. Tallahassee even mentions a "remote" chance of snow flurries Friday evening.

Bah humbug. It'll never happen.
