Maximum winds (averaged over 10 minutes) estimated at sea: 95 km/h.

Maximum gusts estimated at sea: 130 km/h.

Estimated pressure at center: 985 hPa.

Position on January 17 at 10 a.m. local: 23.9 South / 63.5 East.

Distance from the Reunion coast: 835 km to sector: EAST-SOUTH-EAST

Distance from Mayotte: 2290 km to sector: SOUTH-EAST

Travel: EST, at 17 km/h.

System information:

- BELAL is still at the stage of a tropical storm. It is in a phase of progressive weakening.

- It continues its trajectory towards the east-southeast before beginning a turnaround which will sign its final weakening.

-No more inhabited land is threatened by BELAL.

Position on January 17 at 10 p.m. local: 24.1 South / 64.4 East.

Distance from the Reunion coast: 935 km to sector: EAST-SOUTH-EAST

Distance from Mayotte: 2380 km to sector: SOUTH-EAST

Travel: EST, at 9 km/h.

System information:

- The tropical system BELAL has weakened slightly in recent hours. It is expected to remain at the moderate tropical storm stage for another 24 hours, before weakening permanently thereafter.

- It is currently continuing a slow trajectory towards the east, before starting tomorrow, a short turnaround towards the north then the west-southwest, accelerating towards the mid-latitudes.

- BELAL no longer represents a direct or indirect threat to inhabited lands.

STRONG TROPICAL STORM number 2

Position on January 18 at 10 a.m. local: 23.7 South / 65.7 East.

Distance from the Reunion coast: 1050 km to sector: EAST-SOUTH-EAST

Distance from Mayotte: 2480 km to sector: EAST-SOUTH-EAST

Movement: EAST-NORTH-EAST, at 9 km/h.

System information:

- BELAL is experiencing a temporary increase in intensity, and returned to the stage of a strong tropical storm this Thursday morning.

- Environmental conditions are expected to deteriorate more sharply from next night and lead to a lasting and definitive weakening phase, bringing it to the residual depression stage on Friday.

- This low-intensity residual depression should circulate off the south of the Mascarenes this weekend, a good distance from the sister islands, while filling gradually and without presenting the slightest threat to inhabited lands. It will dissipate completely by Sunday evening.
