Wow, actually it seems to be getting stronger, cloud tops are still cooling. It's an incredible monster, if I hadn't seen Haiyan I would have been even more impressed.

Vongfong is no doubt the strongest cyclone on this planet since Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013.

That said, it still pales in comparison to Haiyan itself, a testament to just how incredible Haiyan was.

Seeing at least some CDG around 75% of the storm now. May still be intensifying...

Slightly off topic, but should we do the thing we did with Marie and Haiyan with saved images at peak go to 1st post?

Absolutely beautiful. Pretty awesome how we have the technology now to have "visible" nighttime imagery!

It has probably peaked. Based on satellite, the peak was likely at 1800Z (intensity 155-160 kt).

wind speeds usually lag satellite presentations, sometimes as much as 12 hours. i could see JTWC still increasing it to 160kt next warning despite the recent warming of convection.

any idea on the 00z best track?

I was tempted to joke and say it looks pretty disorganized to me but I won't sat that - very very impressive, though an OCM on Twitter said it's too bad there isn't recon, but considering its appearance that'd be hazardous flying, so just as well...
