Derek,
I thought I heard the CNN guy say that even though this was a slip fault it has an S wave structure which created a lot of lateral motion both back and forth which would cause much more damage than some other type of wave structure.

Not saying it would be more damage than an upthrust fault but he was saying the S wave is very damaging.

While I am not an earthquake specialist... it seems as if that type of wave would cause more structural damage, vs damage to the surface itself

CNN reported that the UN headquarters in Haiti was leveled, and the presidential palace has been heavily damaged.

I am beginning to think this will be worse than 1 order of magnitude worse than Hurricane Flora in 1963

While I am not an earthquake specialist... it seems as if that type of wave would cause more structural damage, vs damage to the surface itself

makes sense to me. I was just listening to the CNN guy and parroting what he was saying.
