Cycloneye, sorry if it has been asked before but was the earthquake felt in Puerto Rico or in some areas of the island?

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti as well. I heard the news on the radio on the way home. I'm afraid of what we will see tomorrow. :(

CNN reported a few minutes ago that the US was trying to determine the status of the airport to determine if aid can be flown in immediately.

I say re-task an amphibious task force to provide a beach head and to fly in aid. We can respond with military might almost anywhere in the world in a matter of hours so we should be able to get aid into Haiti. We should accept NO excuses for the delay of humanitarian aid. But I remember Katrina where we couldn't get aid into a US state so I won't hold my breath.

Just did a quick check on a couple flights that were scheduled to depart Port Au Prince. Appears the airport is/was open. An American Airlines flight (1908) is inbound to MIA after an hour + delay. Hopefully some good news on getting help in quickly.

The airport being functional would be wonderful news indeed!

A strong and shallow earthquake near Port-au-Prince. That is a catastrophe right there! Terrible situation for them. :(

The flight is a 767/300. I see CNN reporting the flight was boarding at the time of the quake.

How did the pilot know the runway ahead was not collapsed? Sounds like scenes out of a terror movie.

Only that the runway wasn't badly damaged by heaving.

Interesting that this massive earthquake occurred in a "relatively" quiet area

Exactly the point of my post. This bodes well for inbound search and rescue personel and equipment.

that would make sense as CNN has reported that this was a slip fault... not like the fault that caused the tsunami. Most of the waves were lateral, not vertical
