A quick question...

Say a tropical low jumps to a tropical storm. Will a tropical depression number be used or not? Im guessing it would just be skipped and saved until the next actual depression forms.

Nope, it's still given a number.

For instance... say 97L goes straight to TS Ernesto. It would be tagged with the number 05 for model purposes, although it would never be called "Tropical Depression Five". The next depression would be called Tropical Depression Six.
