STUPID QUESTION

#1 Postby Josephine96 » Mon Aug 29, 2005 4:21 pm

I've been wondering this..

Do they call all the "counties" in Lousiana.. "Parishes".. Because you never hear "such and such a county" it's "parish this"

Just wondering.. Please don't shoot me for my lack of knowledge on this arena..

Yep... we are the last state in the country to use parish.

Parish = County

It's just us cajuns not willing to change lol.

I guess lol

All I know is it's weird going to other states and realizing we are the only state to use parish.

Some Caribbean islands use "parish" also, don't they?

And doesn't either Ohio or Pennsylvania use "township" instead of county?

"Louisiana has Parishes instead of Counties. These serve identical functions as Counties. The name derives from the French and Catholic Church influence present during it's inception. "

"The units of local government in Louisiana are called parishes instead of counties. The idea of parishes developed from the Roman Catholic Church districts organized by Spanish colonial governors. "

Pennsylvania has counties which are divided into townships, boroughs, villages, or cities.

Example:

I live in College Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania (Although the Borough of State College is right across the street)

Excepting counties, you cannot live in more than one at a time. :)

My favorite part of this is the guy in charge is the Parish President! I just like the idea of calling him or her Mr. or Mrs. President

We have townships in Ohio too... they are smaller sections within a county.

No. You live in FL, so you live in Osceola County.

No, you are and were the only state to ever use parish. It's not like the other states changed from parish to county at some time in the past, we have always called the sub-governmental unit below state a county (like they call them in England, where the 13 original colonies derived their political systems.)
