Jake Delhomme/Bojangle's help Vermilion Parish Rita victims

#1 Postby CajunMama » Tue Jul 18, 2006 3:26 pm

Nice to know a successful guy hasn't forgotten his roots. He's not from Vermilion parish but this gentleman helps out the area he's from all the time. He's from St. Martin parish and they've had their share of hurricanes too.

NFL Carolina Panthers quarterback, Jake Delhomme’s season last year paid off big for the United Way of Acadiana.
Delhomme presented the nonprofit with a check worth $46,000 during a brief ceremony held today.

The donation was a combined gift from Delhomme — $1,000 for every touchdown pass he threw last season — matched dollar for dollar by Bojangles’ restaurants, a fast-food chicken restaurant chain that Delhomme endorses.

Delhomme requested that the money be used to help Hurricane Rita victims in Vermilion Parish.

“We understand how tragic both hurricanes were, but Rita effected my neck of the woods,” Delhomme said.

The United Way of Acadiana has helped complete about six homes in Vermilion parish, so far.

The process is slow, but Delhomme’s donation will help the progress being made, said Jennifer Briggs, a volunteer who has been assisting victims in the parish since last fall.

“We’re rebuilding these people’s lives one home at a time,” Briggs told Delhomme.

United Way has partnered with the Americorps/National Conservation Community Corps, with teams coming to the region about every six weeks, Briggs said.
