I read somewhere that japan don't usually request retire a name, that's true? if that's the case then to have two requested names to be retired this season could be the first time ever?

I'm surprised, Japan didn't even request retirement for Jebi last year, and that was a very impactful system there, maybe on par with Hagibis.

As far as I know Japan actually calls typhoons by numbers (e.g. Typhoon Hagibis was actually Typhoon 19). I hope they start retiring more names in the future, some storms like Tokage, Songda and Jebi should've been retired.

If I'm not mistaken, Amphan is the last remaining name on the NIO naming list. Has there been any news or updates on the updated naming list as I thought a new naming list would be used after the current one is finished?

With more recent estimates, per NOAA, having Imelda’s damage at $5 billion, its retirement is a coin toss.

That's a big increase. I agree closer to a coin toss, I'd go 40%. Dorian is all but certain to get the dustbin still.

Also, PAGASA had replaced Tisoy (Kammuri) and Ursula (Phanfone) with Tamaraw and Ugong respectively.

Just a side note. The annual typhoon committee meeting, originally scheduled to be held in Hong Kong from February 25 to 28, has been postponed in view of the recent coronavirus outbreak in East Asia. Member countries would usually submit retirement requests during the meeting.

The RA IV meeting is still a go though?

I’d say it’s unaffected given that the coronavirus is still mainly confined to East Asia. Of course it depend on how the outbreak evolves.

Faxai, Hagibis, and Lekima definitely should be retired due to their massive damage totals (although the first two probably won’t be). I guess Kammuri and Phanfone are worthy for retirement since their Philippine names were already retired.

Is the meeting supposed to take place on 3/23? If so, is this still happening (as of now)? I'm sure it will be postponed or held digitally at this point.

I'm guessing it will be digitally run or postponed as well. If COVID-19 is still an issue come May, they may cancel any awareness tours as well.

So the retirement of Dorian will be postponed?

Unless a virtual meeting is held or the WMO does it unilaterally, yes.

So that means no names will be retired? Not even Dorian?
Glad to see that the spread of the virus is halted. Do you have a link?

Re: 2019 Cyclones Retirement
I'd guess Dorian will be retired, along with (if any) 2020 names, at the 2021 conference - there will be 2 years to deal with there. After all, we still have 5 more years before we get back to that point.

Makes sense, health first rather something we could wait on for ages.
