Tasmanian flood waters refuse to subside

#1 Postby senorpepr » Thu Jan 29, 2004 10:51 am

Police say some residents in Tasmania's north-east may remain isolated by floods until late tomorrow.
A helicopter has dropped off food supplies to those in the worst affected areas.
Residents of Ansons Bay, Binalong Bay and Musselroe Bay remained isolated on Thursday night and with more rain forecast, the floodwaters are not expected to subside until later on Friday.

A helicopter has rescued two Aurora Energy employees from Icena Creek near Gladstone after they became isolated by the floods.

Northern Police Commander Scott Tilyard says the pair had been fixing equipment in the area when they became trapped.
"They'd been there since yesterday, not in any danger as such but certainly wet and uncomfortable," he said.
Police have closed the Binalong Bay Road from St Helens to Binalong Bay, including the emergency road, the Musselroe Bay Road east of Gladstone at Icena Creek, the Tasman Highway between Scottsdale and St Helens, St Peter's Pass and St Mary's pass, Ralph Falls Road at Ringarooma, the Ben Lomond and Jacobs Ladder Road, and the Upper Blessington Road.

Police are also asking motorists to avoid the Esk Highway.
A hotline number has been set up to advise the public on road closures.
