Swedish swowstorm leaves 1000s w/out power

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Dec 24, 2003 6:48 pm

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - As many as 5,000 Swedish households were preparing Wednesday for a candle-lit Christmas after a snowstorm left them without electricity, the public energy company Vattenfall said.

"We are working as hard as we can, but it is clear that some of our customers will remain without electricity on Christmas day," said company spokeswoman Anna Lihr.

Heavy snowfall and high winds brought trees crashing down on power lines across Sweden on Monday, paralysing parts of the country and leaving up to 100,000 people without electricity.

Power supply had been restored to all but 5,000 homes Wednesday afternoon -- around 2,000 in western Sweden, the same number north of the capital Stockholm and the rest scattered throughout the country, Lihr said.

Although the worst of the weather had passed, snow and ice continued to make traffic difficult in Sweden as well as in neighbouring Finland and Norway.
