COLD WEATHER SWEEPS ACROSS JORDAN

#1 Postby senorpepr » Fri Dec 19, 2003 2:46 pm

AMMAN (Petra) - The cold front that started affecting the Kingdom on Wednesday evening will continue throughout Friday and lead to more sleet and snow, primarily on hilly areas 1,000 meters above sea level, according to the Meteorology Department.

Originating from Greece and joined in its path by a cold air mass from the North Pole, the depression will bring a further drop in temperatures, accompanied by rain, hail and snow during the weekend.

Meteorology Department Director General Haitham Shaher predicted Ajloun would receive the most snow.
Strong 100km per hour winds gusted (about 50kts) through Ajloun on Thursday, Shaher added.
The cold front also triggered sandstorms in the badia, reducing visibility levels to almost zero.
Last night, light rain fell in the northern areas, with Irbid receiving 2.7mm, Baqura 1mm, and Wadi Al Rayan 2mm.
Over the weekend, winds will be westerly brisk, becoming dusty in the eastern and southern parts.
Temperatures will range from a high of 6C to a low of 0C.
The Meteorology Department warned citizens of poor visibility brought on by airborne dirt and possible floods in low-lying areas.

Shaher expected the cold front, which is gradually moving eastwards, to gradually ease on Saturday.

It looks like they get a little warmer now that the cold front has moved eastward, allowing the subtropical ridge to build back in.
