Flood leaves 70 high and dry in South Africa

#1 Postby senorpepr » Mon Jan 26, 2004 12:24 pm

Ladysmith, KZN (South Africa) - A river broke its banks and flooded about 40 houses in Steadville township near Ladysmith on Monday, leaving 70 people homeless.

Police captain Charmain Struwig said that heavy rainfall on Sunday night had caused the flood.

Water levels rose quickly after the downpour, reaching waist-height in some of the traditional mud homes.

Struwig said there were no reports of missing or injured people, and most of the houses, which were built in a low-lying area, were still standing.

A group of women and children had been temporarily housed at Tsakane community hall.

"This morning we will be able to assess the extent of the damage," said Struwig.
