More winter fun in Jordan today

#1 Postby senorpepr » Mon Jan 26, 2004 11:01 am

The Department of Meteorology said it expects scattered rains today, with a possibility for hail and snowfall on high mountains in the northern region.

The recent rainfall in the northern region has caused the Yarmouk River to "slightly" flood its banks at a rate of 100 cubic meters a second.

The Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported that Minister of Water and Irrigation and Minister of Agriculture Hazem Nasser "toured the River basin," and quoted him as saying that his ministry was working with the Interior Ministry to ensure the safety of people living near the river.

Nasser said that the two ministries are advising area residents against getting too near to the water flow.
On the other hand, part of the excess water is being stored in the Jordan Valley's King Abdullah Canal, while another portion will be diverted "within days" to the Karama Dam.

According to Nasser, the percentage of rainfall so far has reached 56 per cent of the annual average, describing the quantity as "good for cultivation of various crops."

According to official figures, water reserves in the Kingdom's nine major dams up to Sunday stood at 141mcm, or 65 per cent of their total capacity of 217mcm.
