Tornadoes per month so far this year.

2008 Severe Weather Season

JANUARY ...... 79

FEBRUARY ..... 138

MARCH ..... 106

APRIL ..... 163

MAY ..... 384 (As of May 24th)

That puts this years total thus far at an astounding 870 tornadoes. This is well above the average and has broke the record for most tornadoes through the first five months of the year. The previous record was 778 set back in 1999. And to really put this into perspective for you....the average number of tornadoes per year from 1940-2004 is 910. That means as of this writing we were only 40 tornadoes shy of the yearly average and we still have seven months to go!! Read entire blog

(Just in case you were wondering.... the record for most tornadoes in the month of May is 543 set back in 2003.)

I created the poll to somehow get some discussion and see if will going to set a new record for most no. of tornadoes this year...and track down the counts of tornado monthly .. 8-)

The poll needs to be updated - the reported count is already around 1,600.

:uarrow: I think this poll is for the expected amount of confirmed tornadoes at the end of the year.

We are well on our way to them needing to edit their graphic to include numbers "ABOVE" 1600.

At the rate things are going, we could have around 2,000 actual confirmed tornadoes.

That graphic would be alot more relevant if it included 2004 which is currently the most active tornado year on record.

2004 got a lot of help from the tropics though, since we had about 300 tornadoes from the land-impacting tropical systems (especially Frances and Ivan). If we get something similar this year, the records will likely be obliterated.

And a lot of the tornadoes from the hurricanes were weak also. This year has had a lot of intense ones.

That's correct, but 12 people died from tropical-related tornadoes that year.

Yep if anywhere gets a slow moving hurricane the RFQ will help to boost the count up by 40-60 on its own.

The extrap values would put us at close to 1000 which would mean the 2nd half of the year would require about 6-500 probably to break the record. Its more then do able!

Adding up all the numbers on that map makes 2004's tornado count 1826. Although it's a little odd that Ohio would only see 8 twisters all year.

595 tornadoes in May.......wow. That's a huge jump from the last few years...what made this spring's pattern so more volatile?

Well the real number will probably between 350-450 but even thats quite impressive. I think alot of people put it down to the decaying la nina we had which tend sto lead to more active storm season in the plains anyway.

EVen if we assume only 60% of the prelim tornadoes wil count towards the ventual actual count we will already be above 2007 and also 2006.

The big question is however will the hurricane season give us a boost in the summer/autumn?
