Detroit sets all-time seasonal snowfall record

#1 Postby WeatherGuesser » Tue Mar 11, 2014 2:52 pm

The impending 8-10" snowfall over the next day or so ....

... would bring the season tally within a few inches of the snowiest winter in Detroit’s recorded history. Metro Detroit has seen 84.1 inches of snow this season. The record is 93.6 inches, set in 1880-81.

It’s late in the season (first day of spring is March 20), but (NWS Staffer) Clark said that were he to guess, he’d say the record will get broken.

“We could definitely get another one,” he said, adding that Detroit’s biggest snowstorm was April 6, 1886, when 24.5 inches fell.

Wednesday’s late-winter gut punch dumped 6.5 inches of snow at Detroit Metro Airport, according to the National Weather Service, breaking the previous snowfall record for March 12: 2.4 inches, set in 1984.

That pushed the season’s total to 90.6 inches — just behind the all-time record of 93.6 inches set during the winter of 1880-81, weather service data showed.

Well, they did it.

Took until the middle of April, but the record fell.
After a late-season snowfall, the 2013-14 season is officially the snowiest on record at both Detroit and Flint.

Code: Select all

Location   Seasonal Normal   Winter 2013-14    Record (Year)   Current Seasonal Ranking
Detroit Area   42.5"   94.8" (through 6 am April 15)   93.6" (1880-81)   1st
Flint Area   47.4"   83.4" (through 2 am April 15)   82.9" (1974-75)   1st
