I just want lots of precip and cooler temps already! Is that too much to ask for this fall and winter?

Given our weather of the last several years ... yes, that is asking too much!

How can one live in Austin and swill Grey Goose with Tito's and Deep Eddy being made in the backyard?

From @NWSLubbock today on Twitter: Arctic sea ice area is greatest for this time of the year since 2006. Related to the cold temps in nrn Canada lately?

The PWC met in-office adult beverage of choice (which actually isn't all that often) goes back many years where Joe Bastardi and others talked about "vodka cold" coming down into the US. Long before Tito's and Deep Eddy, there was Grey Goose. Never had Tito's but have enjoyed Deep Eddy.

It's been a slow melt season so far up there. It's been cold in the Arctic all summer. 2009 was the last season we saw this kind of slow melt, it's a refreshing change given how we have constantly flirted with record low sea ice for many years since 2006. I don't think this will correlate much with winter though since Arctic ice generally recovers well the same any year the gap is much less than summer. What it does say is that a predominate +AO/+NAO pattern has taken hold this summer up there.

Are you guys trying to make me depressed with all this talk of cold? It's bad enough that my coworker won't stop talking about a "cold winter coming". We were just talking about how it used to get really cold in Houston back in the 1980s (1983, 1989). Imagine 5 days with the temps constantly below freezing here and a low in the single digits. Hey, I'm making myself depressed!

You can get super long natural gas, make a potload on the cold and buy yourself an island where it stays warm all the time!

When you say "cold winter coming", I hear, "lots of gumbo weather".

September 1st check-in! Fall and winter will be here in no time :cold:

You wouldn't know it today, though. The end to this summer has just been brutal.

:uarrow: Nice to see hear from you iorange. Fall and winter are coming. Late season heat waves are worse than mid-summer heat waves. This current pattern is for the birds for sure. Some of us were guessing on the season changing fronts in earlier posts. Care to throw a dart?

Good to see you back! And yes, the end to this summer has been a real Heat Miser mallet to the head. As gpsnowman said, take a guess at the date of the first real front this fall. Some of us have already opined.

It's good to be back! Let's just hope we have more to talk about this year

The first real front of the season? Hmmmm. I think the first real "cool" front has to knock the lows down in the lower 50s and highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.

So, my guess is somewhere in between 10/10 - 10/15.

I might as well look ahead a bit since this tropical season has been....oddly quiet.

That 594 ridge over CO/NM is going to hold tough for a few days, and probably migrate east to Arkansas, as per GFS, so Summer isn't going away in a hurry.

First "cool" front, way out in voodoo country....I'm calling the week of 9/29 - 10/5. An early "fall".
