And yes, the lowest temperatures are from the mountainous regions where temperatures may drop a few degrees below 0 ºC in Guatemala and around 5 ºC in El Salavador.

Yes, for sure. On El Pital in El Salvador, we had 6C (43F) on December 22 2008.

It does snow in Guatmala on the highest volcanoes. In January 1993 there was a skiff of snow when I climbed Tajumulco.

The highest mountains of El Salvador and Guatemala respectively. Tajumulco volcano is one of the very few places where you can see snow in Central America, and only a few times per year, you were very lucky to be there in the right time. The most recent snowfall in Central America was on December 23 2009.

I have some nice photos of El Pital if you want to see them:

It is chilly on clear mornings, but we had good weather.

The snow was probably left over from a just before Chistmas storm in Dec 1992. It is supposed to be the dry season in southern Mexico and Guatamala then, but a snowstorm drove me off Nevado Toluca in Mexico. Snow fell down to just below 11,000 feet/3350 meters on Nevado Toluca, but after that I had good weather for the rest of the peaks I climbed. I imagine that places like Tajumulco are cold enough to snow on several days (it was clear but below freezing when I was up there), but since winter is typically the dry season, it doesn't fall often.

I also wanted to share some nice clouds caused (in part) by the cold air incursion and the winds. I took the pictures from my window in the afternoon of January 7 and the morning of January 10.

On January 26 and January 31 weak cold fronts affected Central America but they didn't bring a significant drop in temperatures so I didn't post the observations. This week a moderate cold front brought northerly winds and lowered the temperatures in Central America, the observations:

Guatemala city, Guatemala

02/10/2010
High: 26°C (79 °F), Low: 16°C (61 °F), winds: 25 km/h (16 mph), gusts: 35 km/h (22 mph)
02/11/2010
High: 27 °C (81 °F), Low: 13°C (55 °F), winds: 20 km/h (13 mph), gusts: 30 km/h (19 mph)

Tegucigalpa, Honduras

02/10/2010
High: 29°C (84 °F), Low: 17°C (63 °F), winds: 20 km/h (13 mph), gusts: 30 km/h (19 mph)
02/11/2010
High: 29 °C (84 °F), Low: 14°C (57 °F), winds: 15 km/h (9 mph), gusts: 20 km/h (13 mph)

San Salvador, El Salvador

02/10/2010
High: 32°C (90 °F), Low: 19°C (66 °F), winds: 20 km/h (13 mph), gusts: 35 km/h (23 mph)
02/11/2010
High: 32 °C (90 °F), Low: 18°C (64 °F), winds: 15 km/h (9 mph), gusts: 25 km/h (16 mph)

It's important to mention that during an El Niño Februaries tend to be warmer than those in Neutral or La Niña years.

02/14/2010
High: 29 °C (84 °F), Low: 12°C (54 °F), winds: 15 km/h (9 mph), gusts: 20 km/h (13 mph)

San Salvador, El Salvador

02/13/2010
High: 30°C (86 °F), Low: 20°C (68 °F), winds: 15 km/h (9 mph), gusts: 30 km/h (19 mph)

San Salvador, El Salvador

03/22/2010
High: 32 °C (90 °F), Low: 20°C (68 °F), winds: 25 km/h (16 mph), gusts: 40 km/h (25 mph)

Managua, Nicaragua

03/23/2010

03/24/2010

I think that this was the last cold front of the season but some models are predicting another weak one for next week, let's see if it verifies but even if it doesn't reach Central America I think it will bring some cooler temps to Texas vbhoutex.

Tegucigalpa, Honduras

03/29/2010

On April the cold fronts rarely reach Central America, it has happened before so it cannot be ruled out but as you can see the last couple of events have been weak and the temperatures are not as low as in February or January.

Thanks for this info on the cold fronts, Macrocane, and the temp obs.
We live near quetzaltenango, but higher up the mountains, at about 3,000 meters above sea level, so we get even colder temps up here. This morning we had a very hard frost, which is very unusual for this early in october, I´m not sure what the temp was. I will reset my therm. to see what our low temp is tonight.

 I'm impressed you already had a frost, could this be an isolated case or the start of a cooler than normal cold front season? Quetzaltenango is one of the coldest (if not the coldest) places in Central America and I will really appreciate if you post the lowest temperature of your location during cold fronts.
